Physical Education

Physical Education is critical to pupil understanding and development in life long habits of exercise and a healthy active lifestyle. It develops pupils’ physical competence, literacy and confidence and their ability to use these to perform in a range of activities. It enhances skillfulness, physical development and knowledge of the body in action. Physical Education provides opportunities for pupils to be creative, competitive, and cooperative and face up to different challenges as individuals and in groups and teams.

Pupils learn how to think in different ways to suit a wide variety of creative, competitive, cooperative and challenging activities. They learn how to plan, perform and evaluate actions, ideas and performances to improve their aptitudes, abilities, preferences and make choices about how to get involved in lifelong physical activity.

The school seeks to provide a full, varied and interesting Physical Education curriculum which challenges, engages and excites staff and pupils alike in line with the experiences of their mainstream peers.

Aims

The aims and objectives of PE relate directly to those of Barley Lane School as a whole: namely that we endeavour to provide an educational experience that offers equality, challenge and the positive outcomes that can be achieved or experienced in mainstream education and further enhance post 16 opportunities and “life chances” or employment. We seek to achieve this by delivering at least 1 and ½ hours of PE a week, supplemented by opportunities at break and lunch times, during outdoor education and activities whereby we access a local gym and to play 5 a side. This is then extended beyond the 2 hour offer of high quality PE.

Barley Lane School PE Department: Curriculum Intent

READY- Physical education is critical to pupil understanding and development of lifelong habits of exercise and a healthy, active lifestyle. It develops pupils’ physical competence, literacy and confidence and their ability to use these attributes to perform a range of activities. This enables our pupils to be ready to participate in leisure, recreation and sport beyond their schooling.

To get pupils ready to learn in PE, establish clear routines and begin with a dynamic warm-up to activate both body and mind. Create a positive and inclusive environment through praise, encouragement, and clear expectations. Make learning objectives clear and link activities to meaningful goals to boost engagement. Use varied, accessible activities and promote a growth mindset, ensuring all pupils feel confident, included, and ready to participate.

RESPECTFUL- PE and Sport are crucial in delivering many life lessons to pupils: it prepares them for a multitude of different outcomes, allowing them to take in many different experiences, and better preparing them for life beyond their schooling. Pupils learn how to think in different ways to suit a wide variety of creative, competitive, cooperative and challenging activities. These experiences allow pupils to fully understand respect and fair play, this in turn encouraging a high level of self-control.

We encourage pupils to be respectful in PE by listening to staff and peers, encouraging others, and following the rules of the game. It involves sharing equipment, taking turns, and playing safely and fairly. Respect also means looking after equipment and accepting decisions without challenge. Most importantly, it’s about including everyone and valuing effort as much as skill.

SAFE- Understanding the key areas within PE is essential in pupils’ understanding not just their own actions but the actions of others around them. They learn how to plan, perform and evaluate actions, ideas and performances to improve their attitudes, abilities, and preferences and make good choices about lifelong physical activity. This helps them to be safe and to ensure safety of those around them, with a better understanding of how to manage risks.

Pupils can show they are being safe in PE lessons by following instructions carefully and using equipment properly. They should wear the correct clothing, including appropriate footwear, and remove any jewellery. Playing safely means being aware of their surroundings, avoiding reckless behaviour, and respecting personal space. Listening to rules and stopping immediately when asked helps keep everyone safe.

At Barley Lane we endeavour to provide an educational experience that offers equality, challenge, enjoyment and positive outcomes from our youngest pupils in Key Stage 2 to our leavers in Key Stage 4. Our pupils enjoy a broad and balanced curriculum based on the solid foundations of embedded relational practice, allowing all pupils to achieve in a safe and engaging way. Our overall goal is for pupils to continue to have an active lifestyle beyond school through following one of our three pathways:

  • Pathway 1- Healthy Living Pathway- Pupils explore the benefits of leading a healthy, active lifestyle with physical activity at its heart
  • Pathway 2- Sporting Habit Pathway- Pupils are encouraged to identify activities they enjoy and explore how these can be adapted as part of their own healthy active lifestyle
  • Pathway 3- Excellence Pathway- Pupils are encouraged to pursue at least one sporting activity in an extra-curricular setting, further enhancing their knowledge and skills

Our pupils also enjoy many additional opportunities to experience a wide range of activities throughout break and lunch times, and through our developing Forest School and extensive Outdoor Education provision. This gives our pupils multiple experiences outside of the norm, encouraging them to build their confidence, be challenged and thus thrive well beyond their schooling.

We enable pupils to leave our care with the knowledge of how to not only lead a healthy, active lifestyle but to thrive, reach their full potential, and do so with a confidence that they can make a positive contribution to whatever it is they choose to do.

  • Key Stage 2 PE (skill acquisition phase)– Pupils will experience a multitude of different sports and activities challenging them in different ways acquiring new skills. Our aim is to engage pupils in enjoyable activity and create an ethos of curiosity.

  • Key Stage 3 PE (skill development phase)– Pupils have the opportunity to build on learnt knowledge and engage in more sport-specific areas, developing their practical sporting abilities and confidence. Within the classroom, they learn more of the theoretical concepts around PE, and consolidate their understanding of how to live a healthy active lifestyle.

  • Key Stage 4 PE (skill consolidation and enhancement phase)–Pupils build on the knowledge gained throughout Key Stage 3, and work towards achieving a Level 2 NCFE award in Protective Services and a Level 1 NCFE award in Physical Health, Exercise and Nutrition. This gives our pupils a very well-rounded education, arming them with the appropriate tools to live a healthy, active lifestyle and fully preparing them for moving onto life beyond Barley Lane.

At Barley Lane school, we prioritise the core themes of resilience, conflict and resolution, and empathy across all aspects of learning and school life. We believe in nurturing resilient learners who persevere through challenges and view setbacks as opportunities for growth. We actively teach and model positive conflict resolution, helping pupils develop the skills to navigate disagreements calmly, respectfully, and constructively. Empathy is woven into our culture, encouraging students to understand and value others' perspectives, leading to stronger relationships and a more inclusive, supportive community. These values are embedded in our curriculum, behaviour expectations, and daily interactions to help shape well-rounded, emotionally intelligent individuals.

Mini Football Tournament 28-3-2025

Another fantastic afternoon of football down in Newton Abbott. Three teams (Magdalen Court, Orchard Manor and Barley Lane) turned up for the latest round of matches.

Game 1 ended up with Magdalen Court beating Orchard Manor 1-0.

Game 2 saw the mighty Barley Lane take on Magdalen Court.

Early pressure from MC saw newly selected goalkeeper LDM tested between the sticks, pulling off a couple of amazing saves and his defence getting the ball up the pitch. The midfielders were knocking the ball around well and the boys had several chances on goal but unfortunately couldn't find the back of the net, the closest hitting the crossbar.

With a few minutes left of the game the opposition keeper kicked the ball out which fell nicely for JT who managed to lob the keeper and send Barley Lane 1-0 up!

Consistent passing and some fearless defending meant that Barley Lane were able to comfortably hold out for the win.

Game 3 put Barley Lane against Orchard Manor.

Again, early pressure in front of goal put the defenders and keeper to the test, unfortunately JG scored a screamer into the top corner of his own goal!

The game was pretty much a stalemate from then on in, with the boys knocking on their door in the closing moments but unable to make the crucial breakthrough.

A fantastic afternoon with the boys having a brilliant time in the sunshine.

P.S. A tactical masterclass from Mr Blackmore who showed great faith in LDM, our man of the match!

School Games Mark - Gold Award

Barley Lane School is absolutely thrilled to announce that it has been awarded the prestigious School Games Mark – Gold Award!

This respected, government-led accolade, overseen by the Youth Sport Trust since 2012, recognises schools that show outstanding commitment to competitive sport, accessible opportunities, youth leadership, and physical activity both for their own students and across the wider community.

To achieve Gold, Barley Lane excelled in delivering high participation—ensuring every pupil benefits from quality PE and extracurricular sport—organising regular in-school and inter-school competitions across a range of abilities, and promoting leadership by involving students in officiating and event planning roles. They also worked closely with local coaches and clubs, boosting their workforce development and establishing meaningful partnerships .

This achievement highlights the school's unwavering focus on making sport inclusive, engaging, and developmental—building teamwork, confidence, and healthy habits in every child. Everyone at Barley Lane—from pupils and parents to staff and PE leaders—is filled with pride and excitement as they look ahead to next year’s challenge…perhaps even Platinum!
