Physical Education

Physical Education is critical to pupil understanding and development in life long habits of exercise and a healthy active lifestyle. It develops pupils’ physical competence, literacy and confidence and their ability to use these to perform in a range of activities. It enhances skillfulness, physical development and knowledge of the body in action. Physical Education provides opportunities for pupils to be creative, competitive, and cooperative and face up to different challenges as individuals and in groups and teams.

Pupils learn how to think in different ways to suit a wide variety of creative, competitive, cooperative and challenging activities. They learn how to plan, perform and evaluate actions, ideas and performances to improve their aptitudes, abilities, preferences and make choices about how to get involved in lifelong physical activity.

The school seeks to provide a full, varied and interesting Physical Education curriculum which challenges, engages and excites staff and pupils alike in line with the experiences of their mainstream peers.

Aims

The aims and objectives of PE relate directly to those of Barley Lane School as a whole: namely that we endeavour to provide an educational experience that offers equality, challenge and the positive outcomes that can be achieved or experienced in mainstream education and further enhance post 16 opportunities and “life chances” or employment. We seek to achieve this by delivering at least 1 and ½ hours of PE a week, supplemented by opportunities at break and lunch times, during outdoor education and activities whereby we access a local gym and to play 5 a side. This is then extended beyond the 2 hour offer of high quality PE.

Professional Feedback 2025/2026
"I found the experience of coaching at Barley Lane to be incredibly positive.
The children I worked with threw themselves into the sessions with great enthusiasm and energy. We cannot wait to return to the school next academic year."

Professional Feedback 2024/2025
Exeter Chiefs - from Dave Armstrong
PE team, I just wanted to pass on my thanks for the great 4 weeks I’ve spent delivering rugby sessions to the boys at Barley Lane.
All the boys really did engage throughout all the sessions. Some showing real promise to the point I would love to see them attending a local rugby club, to further their enjoyment and development for the game.
I am excited about the prospect of attending school soon.
Exeter City - from Ethan Chalk

Really enjoyed delivering at Barley Lane School. Staff were extremely welcoming and friendly, and the students engaged well in both the theory and practical elements we delivered to them.

Without doubt, we would love to return to deliver more sessions in the future.

The Golf Lounge - Simon

I just wanted to say how much of a pleasure it’s been having Barley Lane School visit us over the past term. The boys have been an absolute credit to the school - polite, respectful, and fully engaged throughout.

As a former PE teacher, it’s been great to watch them take on a new challenge, build on their skills, and most importantly, support each other along the way. Learning something like golf isn’t easy, but they’ve shown real encouragement for one another and offered praise when it’s been deserved. That kind of teamwork and attitude makes a huge difference when learning something new.

We’ve really enjoyed having them with us and look forward to welcoming more students and staff in the next academic year.

Feedback from Mr Liddon

Taking the boys to the golf lounge has been fantastic.

All the students have engaged well in a sport that they would have very limited experience in, supporting each other and progressing their techniques along the way. Having the confidence to try something new in a different environment and step outside of their comfort zone will stand the boys in good stead moving forward.

Immensely proud of all that have come along and taken part.

Extra-curricular opportunities

Mini Football Tournament 28-3-2025

Another fantastic afternoon of football down in Newton Abbott. Three teams (Magdalen Court, Orchard Manor and Barley Lane) turned up for the latest round of matches.

Game 1 ended up with Magdalen Court beating Orchard Manor 1-0.

Game 2 saw the mighty Barley Lane take on Magdalen Court.

Early pressure from MC saw newly selected goalkeeper LDM tested between the sticks, pulling off a couple of amazing saves and his defence getting the ball up the pitch. The midfielders were knocking the ball around well and the boys had several chances on goal but unfortunately couldn't find the back of the net, the closest hitting the crossbar.

With a few minutes left of the game the opposition keeper kicked the ball out which fell nicely for JT who managed to lob the keeper and send Barley Lane 1-0 up!

Consistent passing and some fearless defending meant that Barley Lane were able to comfortably hold out for the win.

Game 3 put Barley Lane against Orchard Manor.

Again, early pressure in front of goal put the defenders and keeper to the test, unfortunately JG scored a screamer into the top corner of his own goal!

The game was pretty much a stalemate from then on in, with the boys knocking on their door in the closing moments but unable to make the crucial breakthrough.

A fantastic afternoon with the boys having a brilliant time in the sunshine.

P.S. A tactical masterclass from Mr Blackmore who showed great faith in LDM, our man of the match!

 PE Life Skills Award

At our school, we recognise that physical education is far more than just sport — it’s a powerful tool for personal growth, resilience, and social development. That’s why we proudly deliver the PE Life Skills Award to our pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
This tailored programme uses the structure and engagement of physical activity to develop essential life skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership, emotional regulation, and goal setting. Through supportive, inclusive PE sessions, pupils are given the opportunity to build confidence, improve self-esteem, and experience success in a positive and structured environment.

The PE Life Skills Award plays a key role in our whole-school approach to emotional well-being and personal development — helping every child to unlock their potential, both on and off the pitch.
