Opportunities for Employment - Barley Lane School

“Barley Lane is a calm and nurturing environment where pupils feel safe. Pupils are positive about the care
they receive and how staff accept them as individuals. They appreciate how staff listen to them and give
them the help they need to manage their emotions successfully. Pupils are adamant that staff treat them
with respect and understand them. This means that when pupils have incidents of challenging behaviour,
they feel they always have a fresh start.” Ofsted 2024
Barley Lane School is a day special school. Our school provides education for up to 80 pupils aged 7-
16 who benefit from small group and adapted learning. Although we are a small school that teaches
to the national curriculum, we supplement this with nurture principles and relational practice to build
trust, emotional development and resilience and a positive climate for learning. We embrace a change
us to change them model, understanding a culture of consistent adult behaviour is an essential piece
of practice when supporting children and young people with complex needs.
We are located in the St Thomas area of Exeter and are looking for Learning Support Assistants to join
our increasing relational family to grow and thrive together. The successful candidate(s) will be
passionate about working with children and young people and someone who is a reflective
practitioner, dedication and willing to learn is essential with a constant drive to improve their own
practice. Most importantly, you share our values of being Ready, Respectful and Safe in a community
that is honest, humble and hardworking for the children, their families and each other.
We offer exciting training and development opportunities. We will offer extensive support and
guidance to help you achieve your aspirations while you help the children achieve theirs. You
may work across the school or specialise within an identified class or subject area where you will be
supporting and learning from others. You should have a good standard of general education with
good numeracy and literacy skills. You will be able to communicate effectively with children and
adults. The ability to specialise in literacy and or numeracy would be welcome, but not necessary.
However, a good standard of English and Maths is desirable.
Perhaps you want to become a teacher, an educational psychologist, or another education-based
career, and are looking for a special school to gain some experience in an education setting. We have
a good track record of developing people in the direction they want to go, whether it is remaining
within our relational family, or eventually moving on to further education or career progression
elsewhere, we are passionate about retention and development.
When you walk into the building, you will feel our school is a place where the whole community is
ready for learning, respectful to each other, and operating in a safe way. Our learners are empowered
to be the best that they can possibly be; where the individual abilities of each person are recognised,
and where coaching for adulthood as well as educational success is at the heart of all we aspire to
achieve.
